As the main market square (Markt) was too small, a number of smaller market squares sprung up in Maastricht. Each one specialized in their own products. One such market specialized in buying and selling grain. This square was where the Onze Lieve Vrouwepoort (Gate of Our Dear Lady) of the first city wall stood. The classicistic watchtower still stands to this day.

The lime tree in front of the café terrace was planted to celebrate the birth of King Willem-Alexander in 1967. In the south in the park is a tree with silver fencing, which was planted on the occasion of his coronation in 2013. If you climb the stairs to the top of the Onze Lieve Vrouwewal wall, you will have a better view of the tree!
